Supplementing with phosphorus during times when pasture quality and quantity is high can be most beneficial as livestock will respond best to phosphorus supplementation when their energy and protein requirements are being met.

Consumption Management

Livestock will crave and seek out phosphorus if deficient. Salt can interfere with consumption and may be altered to slow or increase supplement intake. In phosphorus-deficient areas where bone chewing may occur (either during lactation or where significant signs of lameness are observed) a higher intake of phosphorus supplements (up to150g/day for cattle) may be beneficial.
