With the powerful combination of
broad spectrum minerals and protected protein, these products are designed to enhance rumen function over extended dry periods to maximise performance of stock grazing standing dry feed.
Lack of protein and minerals in drought affected or frosted pasture decreases rumen microbe activity, slowing digestion down to the point that stock are not able to consume enough dry feed to maintain body condition.
The more stock eat, the more they produce. So, as well as providing broad spectrum minerals that are lacking in dry feed, MegaMin Protein Supplements have been formulated to stimulate rumen microbes to help increase digestion for extended periods of time, allowing stock to increase intake of dry fodder and to graze further afield.
Feeding Rumen Microbes
Rumen microbes contain 60% protein and when digested, they provide the majority of the protein requirements for cattle and sheep.
Feeding Rumen Microbes
Rumen microbes require protein (nitrogen) to build up their numbers.
Urea (non-protein nitrogen) is often the only source of Nitrogen provided in dry feed supplements. Because rumen microbes rapidly break down this form of nitrogen to ammonia (<1hr), optimum rumen function is only maintained for a short period, reducing the digestion of dry fodder.

Backed By Science
In replicated trials conducted at University of New England, MegaMin Mineral Blend (the organic minerals that form the base of all of our livestock supplements) was proven to be:
- an effective dry feed supplement compared to the use of Urea
- an effective pH buffer in comparison to the use of Rumensin for grain fed stock
The Principle of the Primary Limiting Nutrient:
The aim of supplementing livestock is to bridge the nutritional gap between what the pasture can supply and what the animal actually requires to maintain health, growth and reproduction. This is why the principle of the primary limiting nutrient is critical for a successful supplementation program.
Liebig’s Law of the Minimum states that growth is dictated not by total resources available, but by the scarcest resource (limiting factor). For example, the performance of an animal is restricted by the availability of the most limiting nutrient and excess supply of nutrients other than the primary limiting nutrient will have little to no effect on performance.

Customer Stories
David Blackwood, Balladean QLD
“Initially, steers running on dry, frosted lovegrass and native grasses had an average compensatory weight gain of 34kg/head (1.8kg/day) in the first 2 weeks of the trial. At the end of the trial period late in February 2014, steers had an average weight of 580kg with a top weight of 725kg. The average growth was 130kg over 180 days or 0.72kg/day despite severe drought conditions.”
Jeff Elder, Dalby QLD
“When cows had been on the supplement for 4 months, preg testing was carried out and we were shocked at the result. Despite the worst drought on record, 98% of our cows were in calf. Cows were only in store condition but those that calved in the drought did a great job on their calves. We ended up with good quality calves that wernít woody and we didnít need to sell our cattle at the bottom end of the cattle market.”
Michael Gall, Jandowae QLD
“The cows were doing it a bit tough but we were very pleased when out of a group of 228 cows, 217 of them were pregnancy tested in calf. A 95% success rate is great considering we only join for three months.” The empty cows were then fed for 50 days on the ration that Paul formulated and they sold for a profit of $400/head.”
