Alongside his role as livestock agent with Farrell McCrohon Stock & Station Agents, Dave Farrell runs a successful beef backgrounding operation in the Clarence Valley, NSW. In previous years, Dave relied on ear tags and chemical sprays to manage buffalo fly and in anticipation of the proposed restrictions on the use of ear tags containing diazinon, he experimented with the use of MegaMin SulPhos + Garlic when fly pressure became a major issue last January.

After about three weeks Dave noticed a clear difference – the garlic effect was working, with noticeably fewer flies irritating the cattle.

When cattle are restless, irritated and have sores, they aren’t grazing and gaining weight. On MegaMin SulPhos + Garlic, they were much happier, more settled, and gained more kilos instead of kicking and swishing their tails around all day. It has worked for me and my situation – without a doubt,” Dave said.

“This spring, as soon as buffalo flies appear, I’ll feed MegaMin SulPhos + Garlic with salt earlier in the season and continue targeted spraying if required.”

During the winter months, Dave uses MegaMin Extra Magnesium to support livestock to transition onto ryegrass, reducing the risks associated with magnesium deficiency such as grass tetany. “Not only does it help protect against Grass Tetany, the extra magnesium had a calming effect on livestock heading into the feeder system”, Dave said.
