MegaMin Feedlot Trials

In replicated trials performed by Dr Lewis Kahn, University of New England, MegaMin Mineral Supplement was proven to be a natural, economical and effective alternative to the use of Eskalin (antibiotic) and Rumensin (ionophore) for livestock on grain rations.

Trial Objective: To evaluate the use of MegaMin Loose Supplement as an acidosis preventative and to evaluate growth performance of feedlot steers.

Results in brief:

These studies confirmed that supplementation with MegaMin Mineral Supplement provided equivalent animal health protection and growth performance, compared to the antibiotic, Eskalin and the combination of Eskalin® and Rumensin®, when animals were fed the high grain diet used in this research.

  • No evidence of any animal heath problems (eg acidosis) were evident.
  • Feed intake was unaffected by supplementation.
  • Growth rates were not significantly different for the various supplements/additives
  • Carcass grading suggested that animals fed MegaMin performed better than those fed Eskalin and Rumensin.

MegaMin: Equivalent Acidosis Prevention

In comparison to the Eskalin and Rumensin, UNE research indicated that the use of MegaMin Loose Supplement provided equivalent animal health protection and growth performance. No evidence of any animal health problems (eg acidosis) were evident during the trials.

MegaMin: Equivalent Volatile Fatty Acids and Rate of Digestion

The level of Volatile Fatty Acids (chart on left) and the rate of digestion (right) indicate that cattle fed MegaMin Loose Supplement performed equally as well as cattle fed Eskalin or the combination of Eskalin and Rumensin.

Economical Production

Growth rates were not significantly different for the various additives however the lower cost and higher weight gain for cattle fed MegaMin Loose Supplement is of commercial importance. Carcass grading suggested that animals fed MegaMin Loose Supplement performed better than those fed Eskalin and Rumensin.

These trails confirmed what many farmers had reported over the years. Now, these same natural, organic minerals are formulated with additional elements to ensure there is a MegaMin blend to cover specific seasonal requirements.
